Viewers warned to watch Nymphomaniac alone on Netflix – here’s why

The film follows a self-proclaimed nymphomaniac who recounts her tumultuous life after being found injured in an alley by an older man. Through eight chapters, she reflects on her experiences from childhood to age 50, exploring her relationships, personal struggles, and addictive behaviors. Meanwhile, the man listening offers his intellectual and often unconventional interpretations of her story.
Viewer Warnings for Graphic Content
Given the film’s explicit adult scenes—blending real performances with digital effects—many viewers have taken to social media to advise caution when watching it, especially in shared or public spaces.
One person recommended, “If you’re planning to watch Nymphomaniac parts 1 & 2, make sure you watch it alone.”
Another viewer shared, “I definitely shouldn’t have watched this when I was younger.”
A third commented, “I feel like I should probably watch Nymphomaniac alone… Don’t ask questions.”
Before the film’s release, producer Louise Vesth discussed the unique filming process with The Hollywood Reporter at Cannes.
“We filmed the actors pretending to engage in [adult activity], then used body doubles for the actual scenes. In post-production, we digitally combined the two,” Vesth explained. “So, above the waist, you’ll see the stars, and below the waist, it’s the doubles.”
Critical Reactions: Divisive but Passionate
Reactions to the film have been varied, with critics offering both praise and criticism. The first volume of the film currently holds a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second volume has a slightly lower score of 59%.
Some reviewers lauded the film’s ambition, performances, and bold, unconventional narrative. One critic wrote, “With its absurdly provocative obscenities, fearless performances, and indulgent lack of structure, Nymphomaniac elicits a familiar mix of gasps, sighs, and even laughs.”
Another reviewer added, “Outrageous, inspired, frustrating, childish, perplexing, cruel, beautiful, and humorous – Nymphomaniac is a film you can’t easily dismiss as just ‘good’ or ‘bad.’”
However, others criticized the film for its emotional detachment and graphic content. One review noted, “For those who don’t see [adult appetite] as something akin to fly fishing, Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1 feels more tiresome than titillating. It’s a strange, bleak, and predominantly male perspective on a woman’s desires, rather than a thoughtful exploration of them.”
Both volumes of Nymphomaniac are currently available for streaming on Netflix and Kanopy in the U.S.
