Sometimes referred to casually as “old person smell,” this phenomenon is usually a completely natural biological process rather than a sign of poor hygiene.

As people grow older, several physical changes occur. Skin becomes thinner, hormone levels shift, and sweat glands may function differently than they did in earlier decades. These changes can alter the chemical balance on the skin’s surface. One compound associated with age-related scent is called 2-nonenal, which can develop when certain fatty acids on the skin break down through oxidation.

Another factor is that aging skin sheds dead cells more slowly. When these cells accumulate, they can create an environment where bacteria thrive. These bacteria break down compounds found in sweat and skin oils, which can lead to noticeable odors. Importantly, this process is not necessarily related to hygiene habits—it is simply part of how the body changes over time.

Fortunately, maintaining freshness does not require dramatic lifestyle changes. Often, small adjustments to daily routines can make a meaningful difference.

Gentle Cleansing

One common misconception is that stronger soaps or heavily scented products will eliminate odors more effectively. In reality, harsh soaps—especially in sensitive areas—can disrupt the skin’s natural balance and sometimes make irritation or odor worse. Clothing choices can also influence body odor. Wearing the same underwear for long periods—especially overnight—can trap moisture and bacteria against the skin. Changing into fresh, breathable underwear before bed allows the skin to stay dry and comfortable.

Other items that are sometimes overlooked include bathrobes and loungewear. Like towels, these fabrics absorb sweat and skin cells and should be washed regularly.

Shaving routines may also affect body odor. Shaving removes hair but can leave behind residue from deodorant and dead skin cells. If this buildup isn’t rinsed away thoroughly, it can contribute to lingering odor. Rinsing the skin carefully and allowing it to dry before applying deodorant can help prevent this.

It’s also worth noting that the idea of an “aging smell” is sometimes influenced by social stereotypes. Research suggests that people’s perception of scent can change depending on what they believe they are smelling. In some studies, participants did not react negatively to certain odors until they were told the scent came from an older individual. This indicates that cultural attitudes about aging may influence how these natural scents are perceived.

In reality, the human body simply functions differently with age, and that is a normal part of life. With a few thoughtful adjustments to daily habits and a gentle approach to personal care, most people can maintain comfort and freshness without difficulty.
