U.S. Officials Announce Elimination of Iranian Figure Linked to Alleged Assassination Plot Against Trump

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that American forces have killed an Iranian operative who officials say had previously been associated with a suspected plot targeting former President Donald J. Trump.

During a Pentagon press briefing on March 4, Hegseth explained that the individual was located and eliminated amid the ongoing joint military campaign carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, referred to as Operation Epic Fury.

According to Hegseth, the person killed had reportedly led a group that U.S. authorities had earlier connected to an alleged assassination plan involving Trump.

While discussing the strike, the defense secretary framed the situation partly in personal terms, noting that Iran had previously been accused of attempting to target Trump but that those believed to be involved were ultimately tracked down and dealt with by U.S. forces.

At the same time, Hegseth emphasized that eliminating individuals tied to the alleged plot was not the central goal of the wider military campaign. Instead, the operative was one of several military and intelligence-related targets identified during the course of the operation, and the strike occurred when the opportunity arose.

U.S. officials have previously referenced allegations of threats against Trump in connection with criminal charges made public in 2024 by the Department of Justice. In those filings, prosecutors accused an Iranian citizen of taking part in a murder-for-hire scheme during the U.S. presidential campaign. Iranian officials have rejected those accusations, stating that their government was not involved in any such operation.

During the same briefing, Hegseth also stated that the current military campaign against Iran was achieving its objectives, pointing to attacks on Iranian defense infrastructure and other strategic facilities.

The announcement comes at a time when tensions between Iran and a coalition led by the United States and Israel are intensifying, raising concerns among international observers about the possibility of the conflict expanding into a broader regional war.
