Beach family photo goes viral after viewers spot terrifying detail

What was meant to be a relaxing family outing at a beach in Melbourne quickly turned unsettling when one family later discovered something alarming hidden in the background of their photo.
A family photo taken during a sunny day at Carrum Beach in Melbourne later revealed something that many viewers found unsettling.
In the picture, a father and his young daughter can be seen smiling and waving at the camera, enjoying the moment and completely unaware of what appears to be forming in the water behind them.
The image only drew attention after the family returned home and looked at it more closely. In the background, just a short distance from where they were standing, a dark shape can be seen emerging from the water. The discovery immediately raised questions about what it might be.
When the photo first surfaced online in 2023, it quickly spread across social media, with many people debating whether the figure was actually a shark or simply an unusual formation caused by waves and shadows.
The story has resurfaced again recently, gaining renewed attention online as users continue to speculate about what was really captured in the image.
At the time the photo circulated, local authorities noted that the situation may not have been entirely coincidental. On the same day the picture was taken, SES Chelsea had issued a warning to beach visitors after a shark sighting was reported in the area.

Some social media users remained skeptical about the claim that the object in the photo was a shark.
One person pointed out, “It looks too shallow for a shark with a fin that large, especially considering where the dog and the man on the left are standing. Wouldn’t the person behind them have noticed it?”
Another commenter shared a similar view, writing, “It can’t be completely ruled out, but it seems very unlikely that a shark swimming that close to shore wouldn’t have been spotted by anyone in the photo.”
Others began proposing alternative explanations for the mysterious shape in the water.
According to the Victoria Fisheries Authority (VFA), officials were unable to confirm exactly what appeared in the image. Both Life Saving Victoria and the VFA reviewed the photo but said there was not enough clear evidence to determine whether it was actually a shark.
However, Professor Charlie Huveneers, Research Leader of the Southern Shark Ecology Group, suggested a more likely explanation. He believes the object in the image was probably not a shark at all, but a stingray.
“The photo quality makes it difficult to say with certainty,” he told Yahoo News Australia. “But based on the shape, it doesn’t resemble a shark’s dorsal fin. It’s more consistent with the wing of a Southern Eagle Ray, which are commonly found in shallow coastal waters and often appear near beaches.”

The Southern Eagle Ray, a species considered near threatened, is native to the waters of southern Australia and is also occasionally seen around parts of New Zealand.
The eerie photo surfaced only days after another notable marine encounter. Off Aldinga Beach, south of Adelaide, fishermen captured video of a large great white shark swimming around their boat. The shark was estimated to be about 13 feet long, making the footage particularly striking.
Following these incidents, authorities reminded beach visitors to remain cautious and aware of their surroundings while in the water.
Meanwhile, the debate over what exactly appeared in the family’s beach photo continues. While some remain convinced it could have been a shark, others support the theory that it was simply a stingray passing through the shallow water. Either way, the mysterious image has continued to spark curiosity—and send a few chills—among people across Australia.
