David Letterman’s question that left Jennifer Aniston very uncomfortable

David Letterman was long regarded as one of late-night television’s defining figures, celebrated for his sharp humor, quick wit, and effortless rapport with guests. But in hindsight, some of his interviews have aged poorly, especially when viewed through today’s lens.
One such moment involved Hollywood star Jennifer Aniston. What may have seemed at the time like a typical late-night exchange has since been reconsidered by many viewers as awkward and uncomfortable.
A resurfaced image of Jennifer Aniston with David Letterman has renewed discussion around a memorable 2006 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Aniston had joined the program to promote The Break-Up, the romantic comedy in which she starred opposite Vince Vaughn, who also co-wrote and produced the film.
The conversation quickly took an uneasy turn when Letterman focused heavily on Aniston’s appearance, particularly her legs. Dressed in a black button-down blouse and black shorts, Aniston became the subject of repeated compliments from the host, while the camera also lingered on her outfit.
Letterman praised her look, saying the outfit worked because she had “fantastic” legs, repeatedly drawing attention to them throughout the exchange. Aniston appeared somewhat caught off guard but tried to laugh off the attention, explaining that she had simply chosen shorts because of the warm weather.
Looking back, the interview has become an example of how certain celebrity interviews from the past are now being reassessed, with viewers questioning the tone and boundaries that were once treated as acceptable on mainstream television.
Although Jennifer Aniston has long been known for handling uncomfortable moments with poise, even she appeared visibly uneasy during one particular interview in which David Letterman repeatedly drew attention to her legs.
The moment did not end with his first compliment. As the conversation continued, Letterman returned to the subject again, remarking that her legs were something special. The exchange struck many viewers as awkward at the time, and in hindsight, it has become even more uncomfortable to watch.
The interview then shifted into another sensitive area when Letterman began asking Aniston about her rumored relationship with Vince Vaughn, her co-star in The Break-Up. He also questioned her about whether Vaughn had been behind the idea of her appearing nude in the film. Caught off guard, Aniston paused before redirecting the question, suggesting that Letterman should have asked Vaughn when he had appeared on the show.
Years later, it became known that Aniston and Vaughn had started dating while filming The Break-Up. Aniston later spoke warmly about Vaughn, saying he played an important role in helping her through the difficult period following her highly publicized divorce.
Still, during that 2006 appearance, Letterman seemed unable to move past her appearance. While discussing Vaughn, he again brought up Aniston’s legs, saying he could not stop noticing them. Later, he made another comment about hoping someone at home was recording the moment because he could not stop looking at the shot. Though he did not clearly explain what he meant, Aniston’s expression suggested she understood the remark as another reference to her body.
This was not the first time Letterman had made Aniston uncomfortable on air. In a widely criticized 1998 interview, he grabbed her neck and put a strand of her hair in his mouth. Aniston appeared uneasy and later wiped her hair with a tissue after Letterman handed one to her, making the already awkward exchange even more memorable for the wrong reasons.
Despite these moments, Aniston maintained her composure, as she has done throughout much of her career. She continued the conversation professionally and later returned to The Late Show, once again showing her ability to move past uncomfortable situations with grace.
Two years after the heavily discussed interview about her legs, Aniston appeared on the show again, this time wearing a stylish pink party dress. Clips and images from that appearance have recently resurfaced online, with many social media users once again focusing on her appearance.
But the viral images overlook another detail from the interview: what Aniston was holding in her hand.
During the appearance, while promoting Marley & Me, Aniston was also trying to navigate personal questions, including one about her relationship with John Mayer. At the same time, she brought Letterman a playful and thoughtful gift connected to her recent GQ cover, where she had posed wearing only a red, white, and blue necktie.
“It’s an early Christmas present,” she told him with a smile.
Letterman quickly removed the tie he was wearing and replaced it with Aniston’s gift, with the actress helping him put it on. The tie, from Brooks Brothers, was the same one she had worn on her GQ cover.
“This is a highlight of my career,” Aniston joked as she handed it over.
Letterman, clearly amused, played along while wearing the tie, quipping that the tie had probably felt the same way during the photoshoot.
“This is exciting, I’m dressing Dave!” Aniston said, turning the exchange into a lighthearted moment.
When the tie appeared to sit a little too short, Letterman added another joke, saying, “You know what they say about guys with short ties.”
The moment was playful, and viewers reacted with surprise to the unexpected gift and Aniston’s easy humor.
Still, when these interviews are revisited today, they are often seen in a very different light. Aniston has never publicly criticized the encounters, but many viewers now feel that some of the comments and moments crossed boundaries. What was once brushed off as late-night banter has become part of a broader conversation about how female celebrities were treated in interviews, and why those moments feel so uncomfortable in retrospect.
